How to pronounce “Vollbrechthausen”
“Vollbrechthausen” can be difficult to say if you aren’t familiar with German pronunciation . Here are some quick tips that might help you:
Vollbrechthausen is made up of two elements: “Vollbrecht” and “-hausen”. Combined, the two elements can be loosely translated as “Vollbrecht’s Manor” or “Vollbrecht’s Estate”.
1) Vollbrecht is an old German first name, similar to Albrecht, Ruprecht, or Adalbrecht. There are three main issues for english speakers here – the V, the R, and the CH. The “V” is pronounced like an “F” (ie. Follbrecht ). The “R” is rolled in the back of the throat like a French R, and not rolled like a Spanish R. The “Ch” is soft, as in the classical composer’s name “Bach” (it is not a hard “ch” sound like in ache or chart, or a “sh” sound like in “chef”)
2) “-hausen” is a place name ending, similar to the “-shire” or “-ham” in Nottingham or New Hampshire. It is simply pronounced like the English word “house”, with an extra n at the end.
